Does Church Camp Make a Difference?

CW Campfire Worship

This summer, First Pres paid the way for eight of our children and youth to attend Camp Wyoming. It’s an investment we’ve felt was worth it.

But now we know it is. Vibrant Faith Ministries recently conducted the Effective Camp Research Project. They looked at three Lutheran (ELCA) camps in Wisconsin, talking with campers, staff, and parents.   Here’s what they found:

  • 90% of parents said their kids grew in faith
  • 89% of parents said their kids learned something new
  • Six camper focus groups at the three camps reported it was a good thing to be away from technology like phones, computers and television. Instead, they enjoyed time with friends, being in nature, experiencing new things and growing in faith.

To read more about it for yourself, check out this blog post:

We would love to know what our congregation’s families’ experience of church camp was this summer. Let us know on our Facebook page, or talk with Pastor Lori.

11:00 am Book Reading – Ben and his wife, Mary Vermillion, will read from their memoir about how Ben’s gender transition changed each of them as well as their relationship.

Both events will take place in the Sanctuary with a break for refreshments in Fellowship Hall at 10:30 am.

April “Shower” for Babies in Need!

As part of our “Love in Action” program, our children and youth are asking church members and friends to donate baby items for families in need. Bring them to worship on Sundays, April 10, 17 and 24 and the kids will then deliver the items to Waypoint Services on Wednesday, April 27.

The most needed items are:

  • baby wipes
  • baby shampoo and soap
  • diapers (size 3 and up)

Waypoint Services (located in downtown Cedar Rapids) helps women and children  living in poverty and provides shelter for families escaping domestic violence.

Thanks for supporting our kids and the wider community!

Wacky Wednesday Worship

Recognizing that weekends and Sundays are often busy for families, we have shifted our Christian Education model to a combination of Sunday mornings (11:00am-Noon) and Wednesday evenings (6:30pm-7:30pm).  All children (PreK-Grade 6) are welcome to participate! Amy Weber is always looking for parents and other adults to help out.

We will work on serving the church by doing “spring cleaning” around the grounds.
